‘When I was a 10-year-old boy with a sketchbook of yacht design, I was already sketching out the smooth lines and elegant structures that have become the distinctive identity of our studio.’ Ivan Erdevicki looks back on his childhood in Montenegro with great fondness. It's been a long journey since his dream of drawing boats in a textbook began. Today, he is celebrating the 25th anniversary of his ER Yacht Design studio, based in British Columbia.
Over the past 25 years, the studio has provided naval architecture, styling, and interior design services to clients, all of which are deeply rooted in Erdevicki's formal training. At first, he studied naval architecture in his native country to build a solid foundation. He then broadened his knowledge by studying mechanical engineering at UCLA in Los Angeles. He then attended the prestigious Westlawn Institute of Marine Technology in Maine, where he devoted himself to the study of yacht design and continued to refine his professional skills. He also gained practical experience working for yacht builders such as Delta Marine in Seattle.
In 2000, Erdevicki opened his own studio in Vancouver, British Columbia. Since then, the studio has continued to grow, working closely with a number of builders to create a series of impressive superyacht designs, with Burger Boat Company and Icon Yachts both working with him to create concept designs. Icon Yachts' Gotham Project (shown above) is particularly noteworthy, named after the bat's ears it resembles in its upper deck structure. Of course, the studio's design output is not limited to mega-luxury yachts. Kingship's first catamaran, the Golden Cat 80, for example, was one of Erdevicki's favorites.
Today, Erdevicki, as head designer, is proud to say that the studio has produced more than 300 designs. At the same time, the studio's team has grown, with Pedja Vukovic as Interior Design Manager, overseeing all interior design, and Aleksa Kovinic as Chief Naval Architect, providing expert design support. In order to better serve its clients, the studio has also opened a second office in the port of Montenegro, a move that greatly facilitates meetings with clients in the Mediterranean region.
As for client meetings, requests include modern-looking superyachts and high-performance yachts exceeding 394 feet (120 meters) in length. ‘Our commitment has always been to combine simplicity with sophistication,’ Erdevicki said.
