Is It Expensive to Own a Yacht?

In our daily communications with clients, “Is it expensive to own a yacht?” is a question that comes up very frequently. Many people only see the purchase price, but do not have an in-depth understanding of the actual cost of owning a yacht. In fact, whether you are a first-time buyer or a veteran who is considering upgrading, if you ignore long-term expenses such as operation and maintenance, you will often be caught off guard by the budget.

Today, we're going to analyze the costs of owning a yacht from a variety of perspectives, especially the “hidden costs” that are invisible at the beginning but continue to be incurred in later years.

Yacht on the sea

The Basic Price of Owning a Yacht

There is no single “standard answer” to the purchase price of a yacht, which depends on a number of factors such as the size of the boat, brand, year, configuration and market demand and supply. Generally speaking, the larger the hull and the higher the configuration, the higher the purchase cost.

In terms of approximate price range, the yachts currently on the market are roughly as follows:

Under 15 meters (small yachts): budgets fall roughly between $500,000 and $2.5 million;

15-21 meters (mid-sized yachts): starting at around $2 million, with the top end even approaching $6 million;

21-30 meters (large yachts): asking prices generally range from $6 million to $20 million;

Above 30 meters (superyachts): usually start at $10 million or more, with no upper limit.

It is important to note that these are only valuations, and that some special models, limited customized editions or yachts with celebrity owners may be much more expensive than this range.

Running Costs of Owning a Yacht

The real expenses of owning a yacht have just begun. Even if the yacht is docked for a long period of time, it will still incur operating expenses.

The day-to-day running costs of a yacht include fuel, harbor docking fees, crew wages, communication system expenses, catering and entertainment packages, and so on. Unlike when chartering a yacht where the costs are included in the package, as an owner, everything has to come out of your own pocket. For example:

Fuel costs: closely related to the type of boat, power system, route and speed;

Crew costs: the wages and benefits of an employed crew cannot be ignored;

Consumption on board: recreational equipment, electricity, ingredients, drinking water, etc. are all ongoing expenses.

Mooring fees: each marina charges a different rate, based on the size of the boat; from a few hundred dollars to tens of thousands of dollars per month. If the area where the yacht is moored has harsh winters, consider lifting the yacht out of the water and transferring it to dry dock for winterization and maintenance.

These expenses are not fixed amounts and can fluctuate from voyage to voyage, especially during seasons of heavy use.

Maintenance Costs of Owning a Yacht

Yachts require maintenance whether they are in use or not, and this is an ongoing responsibility. Routine yacht maintenance programs include engine systems, propulsion, marine equipment, safety systems, sail gear (sailing), anti-fouling treatments, and more. For high-end yachts, additional attention is paid to the care of luxury interiors such as teak decks and leather finishes.

In the event of unexpected breakdowns, such as damage to the propulsion system, leaks on the deck, etc., unpredictable repair expenses will also be incurred. Especially for pre-owned yachts purchased at an early age, it is important to have an adequate budget for repairs.

Premiums and Taxes of Owning a Yacht

After owning a yacht, in addition to paying a one-time import or purchase tax, the owner will also need to pay annual yacht property tax and insurance premiums.

Annual yacht insurance premiums on the market usually fluctuate between 0.8% and 1.2% of the purchase amount. The quotes given by insurance companies vary depending on the use (owner-occupied, commercial), the size of the boat, and the sailing area.

If you intend to sail abroad, there may also be additional costs associated with certification in international waters, which must be taken into account in your budget.

The Hidden Cost of Owning a Yacht: Depreciation

Similar to a car, a yacht depreciates from the first day of purchase.

Typically, depreciation is around 10% in the first year; over the next three to four years, annual depreciation is around 7%; after five years depreciation tapers off, but the pressure to repair and maintain begins to rise.

The subsequent decline in resale value, particularly if regular refurbishment has not been carried out, or the vessel is older, is significant, which also has a long-term impact on the overall cost of ownership.

The Combined Cost of Owning a Yacht

Combining the costs of operation, maintenance, insurance, harbor and taxes, the industry generally agrees on an estimate that the annual cost of ownership of a yacht is about 10% to 25% of the purchase price.

An example:

A 60-foot (18-meter) yacht with a market value of $1 million will have annual expenses of about $80,000 to $100,000 per year;

A 100-foot (30-meter), $10 million superyacht can even have annual holding costs of $2 million or more.

This does not include depreciation losses and potential upgrading and refit expenses.

So the answer to the question, “Is it expensive to own a yacht”, is yes. But if you love life at sea, understand the true costs behind it, and are prepared to budget and manage it, then this “expensive” ownership may be the ideal lifestyle you are looking for.
