Fishing is rich and varied, and so are the fishing boats that are suited for it. From small Jon boats and dinghies for shallow waters, to aluminum boats and trawlers for commercial use, as well as specialty fishing boats for different waters in brackish and freshwater, to open boats and speedboats for offshore big game hunting, they all have their own characteristics. In this article, we will delve into and learn more about the different types of fishing boats.

Types of Small Fishing Boats

Jon Boats

Jon boats are a popular and practical type of small fishing boat. Commonly sized from 12-21 feet, most are flat-bottomed and made primarily of aluminum, with a few made of fiberglass or polyethylene. Jon boats usually have a square bow, outboard engine and one to three benches. Not only are these boats inexpensive and easy to launch, but they also don't require complicated maintenance and are popular with anglers for fishing in shallow and calm waters, the

Dinghies

Often used as small fishing boats, dinghies come in a variety of shapes and styles, are simple in design, easy to maintain, powered by an outboard engine, and made of mostly fiberglass, but also quite a few aluminums, and are affordable. Dinghies are available in a variety of hull designs, which may be square or pointed, trimaran designs, flat-bottomed, or semi-V-shaped hulls. Dinghies are ideal for navigating shallow waters due to their small size and ease of transportation.

Types of Commercial Fishing Boats

Commercial fishing boats are generally customized for specific purposes. There are still several types of boats that are used commercially today, and the following are common types of commercial fishing boats:

Aluminum Fishing Boats

Aluminum fishing boats are widely used in offshore fishing, especially in protected waters, and are one of the common types of commercial fishing boats. Not only do these types of fishing boats possess ruggedness and durability, but they are also relatively inexpensive. Many of the top aluminum fishing boat manufacturers specialize in the customization business, and you may see any brand of aluminum boat being put to use in commercial fisheries.

Trawlers

Today's trawlers are becoming more upscale, and while they originated in the commercial fishing sector, the interiors of most modern trawlers are equipped with the usual televisions and comfortable benches, not just a variety of fishing gear. Even so, there are still some commercial trawlers in the commercial fishing industry that are customized for specific needs.

Types of saltwater fishing boats

Center Console Boats

Center console boats are the most popular type of saltwater fishing boat today, allowing anglers to access a wide variety of open and protected waters for their fishing activities, and allowing anglers to maneuver around the hull of the boat in a 360-degree circle around the fish. This type of boat makes good use of deck space, allowing more anglers to fish from bow to stern with ease. Center console fishing boats come in a wide range of sizes, from 16 feet to 60 feet.

Dual Console Boats

Dual console boats have helm and passenger consoles on each side connected by a full-beam windshield with a swing-open center pane that allows access to the bow. Dual console boats have an open cockpit with seating and a fishing deck in the bow and a restroom or small cabin on the passenger side console. Dual console boats have less overall deck space and fishing range than center console boats but are popular with family anglers because of the two consoles and full windshield, which provides better protection for the crew from wind and rain.

Walkaround boats

Walkaround boats have an enclosed bow cabin, side decks with access to the bow, and an open cockpit at the stern for fishing, and most range in size from 24-35 feet. As lifestyle influences increase the focus on day boating and decrease the interest in spending the night on the boat, especially in colder climates, walkaround boats are popular with anglers because of the protection their cabins provide during spring and fall fishing trips.

Types of Freshwater Fishing Boats

Fishing and Ski Boats

Fishing and ski boats are mostly dual console designs, ranging in size from 16-22 feet, and are primarily made of aluminum or fiberglass. Equipped with a variety of fishing and trolling sports equipment such as live wells, rod holders and trolling motors, these boats are popular with families who enjoy both fishing and water sports.

Pontoon Boats

Pontoon boats are the most popular type of fishing boat when it comes to fishing on freshwater lakes and rivers. They come in a wide variety of shapes and sizes, including pontoon boats specifically designed for fishing and high-performance pontoon boats that combine cruising and water sports. These boats range in size from 15-30 feet and offer excellent stability due to their rectangular shape and widely spaced pontoon hull construction.

Bass boats

Bass boats are crafted for the dedicated bass fisherman, ranging from 16-22 feet in length, with spacious front and rear casting decks, bow-mounted electric trolling motors that get close to the fish unobtrusively, and high-powered outboard motors that can push the boat to speeds of 70 mph and more on higher-end models. Aluminum bass boats are not uncommon on the market today, however most top-quality bass boats are made of fiberglass.

Types of Sport Fishing Boats

Convertible

Convertible boats are usually the most popular type of sport fishing boat when it comes to hunting for a big pelagic game in offshore waters. These boats are characterized by a flybridge (some with convertible hulls) on top of the cabin and an open cockpit. Convertibles are large and expensive, most exceeding 40 feet and some reaching 90 feet, and most are custom-built, with a few from top production manufacturers.

Speedboat

A speedboat is a large sportfishing boat with an open cockpit and forward cabin and no flybridge on top, often used for offshore sportfishing. These boats are large in size, mostly between 40 and 50 feet, with a few less than 40 feet. Due to their excellent performance and fishability, speedboats are very popular among anglers in offshore sport fishing.
