In an effort to enhance the allure of the yachting industry and boost the region's appeal as a maritime tourism destination, several Asia-Pacific countries are implementing significant changes. These transformations include the construction of new yacht marinas and the relaxation of regulations related to superyachts.
Maldives
The Maldives' expansion exemplar is the upcoming Zamani Island Superyacht Marina, scheduled to launch in 2026. Mohamed Hameed, Managing Director of Asia Pacific Superyachts Maldives (APS Maldives), emphasized that the upcoming Zamani Island development will be the archipelago's first dedicated superyacht marina. The project will include three resorts spanning eight islands, featuring a superyacht marina with 120 berths, aimed at enhancing the superyacht experience by offering luxury and convenience.
Authorities have now issued free cruising permits to all yachts under 20 meters, up from the previous limit of 15 meters, as part of efforts to simplify and relax regulations for incoming vessels. In recent years, the Maldives has become a leading sailing destination in the region, attracting 35 to 50 superyachts annually, including those up to 150 meters in length.
"The Asia-Pacific region is revising charter license laws to promote global yacht access and implementing changes that will make it easier and cheaper for more superyachts to visit these island nations; accessibility is better than ever before." He also noted that the yachting season in the Maldives has been extended from November to May of the following year, with the average vessel stay lasting 45 to 60 days form Hameed.
Thailand
In Thailand, the Maritime Department has recently revised regulations concerning the entry of superyachts and sports yachts to adapt to and promote maritime tourism. Deputy Minister Manaporn Charoensri announced these updates on September 22, 2024.
The Ministry of Transport has updated the size specifications for visiting superyachts to encourage more maritime traffic and bolster the local economy. The revised guidelines have expanded the vessel size limits, reducing the minimum length requirement for superyachts from 30 meters to 24 meters, while maintaining the limit of up to 12 passengers, in line with international standards. Additionally, insurance requirements have been increased, with a new minimum coverage of $5 million per incident. To further streamline these changes, administrative procedures have been simplified by introducing a new electronic application system.
This move by Thailand signifies an increasing number of yachts over 24 meters entering and exiting Asia-Pacific waters. According to data from the Ministry of Transport, the number of superyacht arrivals in Phuket has significantly risen: from 41 in 2021 to 117 in 2022, and then to 148 in 2023. The Ministry of Transport is currently developing two cruise terminal projects in Laem Chabang Port and Koh Samui, in line with the government's strategic goal of positioning Thailand as the central yachting hub in Asia.
