The Italian Navy’s new Major Hydro-Oceanographic Ship (N.I.O.M.) Quirinale was officially launched today at Fincantieri’s integrated shipyard in Riva Trigoso, marking a significant step forward in Italy’s maritime research and security capabilities. Designed for scientific mapping, hydrographic surveys, and environmental monitoring, the vessel will bolster the initiatives of the Italian Hydrographic Institute, the State Cartographic Authority responsible for national nautical documentation.
The launch ceremony drew high-profile attendees from government, military, and industry, reflecting the strategic importance of the project. Present were Marco Bucci, President of Liguria Region; Hon. Matteo Perego di Cremnago and Senator Isabella Rauti, Undersecretaries of Defence; Vice Admiral Giuseppe Berutti Bergotto, Chief of Staff of the Italian Navy; as well as Fincantieri CEO Pierroberto Folgiero and other senior executives. The ship’s sponsor was Eleonora Di Paola, granddaughter of Vice Admiral Luigi Di Paola and daughter of former Defence Minister Giampaolo Di Paola, linking the launch to Italy’s distinguished naval legacy.
At approximately 110 meters long with a displacement of around 6,000 tonnes, the Quirinale can accommodate up to 140 personnel, including both crew and scientific staff. The ship features a low-emission electric propulsion system, suitable for navigation in environmentally sensitive areas, and is designed to operate in extreme conditions, withstanding temperatures down to -16°C. Its scientific capabilities are state-of-the-art, including tools for hydrographic, oceanographic, and geophysical research, alongside an autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) and an unmanned surface vehicle (USV). A DP2 dynamic positioning system ensures high precision and stability for complex scientific operations, complemented by specialized lifting equipment for deploying instruments and vehicles.
Environmental sustainability and crew safety are central to the vessel’s design. The Quirinale integrates emission-reduction technologies, optimized hull forms, low-impact materials, and other innovations in line with ISO 14001-certified environmental standards. Dedicated Health & Safety systems further protect personnel during all phases of operation.
