At the Monaco Yacht Show, Royal Huisman surprised even seasoned industry insiders with the unveiling of a bold new concept that redefines sustainable superyachting. Long celebrated for its large, high-performance sailing yachts, the Dutch shipyard introduced AERA, a 164-foot (50m) radical superyacht developed in collaboration with Rondal, designer Cor D. Rover and Artemis Technologies.
The headline innovation is a revolutionary fixed wing sail system developed by Artemis Technologies. Unlike traditional fabric sails, AERA features a 2,640-square-foot rigid wing with adjustable trailing-edge flaps. Fully automated and controlled by electric motors, the wing rotates freely and optimizes lift without the need for sheets, winches or complex deck hardware. According to testing, the system delivers dramatically greater efficiency, requiring 40 to 60 percent less surface area than a conventional rig to achieve comparable power.
Ease of operation is central to the concept. The yacht’s integrated control system manages sail trim automatically, allowing the captain to input a destination or speed while the wing adjusts itself for optimal performance. Supplemented by retractable electric sail drives, AERA is designed to deliver near-zero-emission cruising with minimal crew intervention.
Sustainability extends beyond propulsion. A 580kWh battery bank powers onboard systems silently for up to 11 hours, while hydro-generators recharge batteries underway. At anchor, a hydrogen fuel cell supported by pressurized tanks provides up to 72 additional hours of emission-free operation.
Designed as a sleek, asymmetrical catamaran, AERA offers 7,470 square feet of living space across three decks—unusual for a sailing yacht. Accommodating up to 10 guests, the layout combines expansive exterior terraces with intelligent shading to reduce energy consumption.
With AERA, Royal Huisman signals not just a new yacht, but a transformative vision for the future of clean, automated luxury sailing.
