Yacht insurance is a factor to consider when owning a yacht, and purchasing yacht insurance can protect the owner from financial loss due to damage, theft or claims against the yacht. The cost of yacht insurance varies depending on the value and size of the yacht, the purpose of the yacht and the cruising area, depending on the insurance needs and risk factors.

Yacht Insurance

Average annual insurance cost for a yacht

Insurance costs for yachts can range from a few hundred dollars to thousands or even tens of thousands of dollars per year, and generally speaking, the average annual insurance cost for a yacht is between 1% and 5% of the yacht's value. For example, a $400,000 yacht may cost between $4,000 and $20,000 a year to insure, while a $5,000 yacht will cost between $500 and $3,000 a year to insure, depending primarily on the size and value of the yacht.

Two types of yacht insurance

There are two types of yacht insurance, hull insurance and third-party liability insurance. When purchasing insurance for your yacht, you need to consider which type of yacht insurance you are purchasing.

Hull Insurance

If your yacht is damaged in a collision while traveling and you don't have hull insurance, you will have to bear the cost of repairing your yacht. It is always wise to take out insurance to avoid financial loss. Hull insurance usually includes the following coverages:

1. accidental or malicious damage to your yacht, equipment and engine

2. Theft of your yacht

3. Theft of personal effects, yacht fittings and equipment

4. Fire damage to your yacht

5. Damage caused by stranding or collision with submerged objects.

Third Party Liability Insurance

Third party liability insurance covers you for damage caused by you to others, for example, if your yacht causes injury to another person, damage to another yacht or equipment. It does not cover injuries to yourself or damage to your property.

Factors affecting the cost of yacht insurance

There are many factors to consider when determining the cost of a policy, some of which can have a big impact on the cost of insurance, here are the factors you need to consider that may affect the cost of yacht insurance:

Type and size of yacht

The bigger the yacht, the more expensive it will be to buy and the more it will cost to maintain, which means the more expensive it will be to insure. Insurance companies will take into account the cost of repairing the yacht to calculate the cost of insurance.

The age of the yacht

the newer the yacht, the more expensive the insurance is likely to be, older yachts are also less expensive to insure, but older yachts may also be more expensive to insure if they require constant maintenance to ensure safety.

Yacht engine

the insurance company will look at the type of engine of the yacht, high power performance yachts are riskier and will cost more to insure, slow and steady yachts will cost less to insure.

Yacht use

The use of the yacht will affect the cost of the insurance, if the yacht is only used for occasional personal use, the yacht will not be very expensive to insure. If the yacht is used commercially, the cost of insurance may be high as there will be additional premiums for recreational users.

Location of use

the location where the yacht is used will affect the cost of the insurance, using the yacht in a hurricane prone area will make the yacht more expensive to insure due to the increased risk of damage and accidents.

Boating driver's record

boating experience and safety record affects the cost of yacht insurance, if you are a driver with a lot of boating experience and have not been involved in accidents you can get lower insurance rates, but if you have a bad record the insurance company will have the right to refuse to insure you.

Is yacht insurance compulsory?

Yacht insurance is not mandatory, but it is a great way to protect your yacht. Even though you have a lot of experience driving a yacht, you can't guarantee that you won't collide with someone else while traveling. If your yacht is damaged, yacht insurance can save you a lot of money on repairs to your yacht. Most yacht insurance policies don't cost very much, and purchasing yacht insurance can give you more peace of mind when you're out on the water.
