Its durability, offshore performance and luxury technology have gone beyond the brand to become a noble brand representative.
In the open waters of Cape Hatres, currents bring many fish for fishing. These fish are known for their ferocity and danger. In this place, the northeast wind is as strong as the storm, and thousands of yachts die in this "Atlantic grave". So Willis Slane came up with the idea to build a yacht that would captivate this piece of wild and extreme weather. It will be an unusual yacht. It is not feasible to make it with traditional wood. This new yacht must be strong enough to withstand these rough waters. On top of that, the space is large enough to accommodate an entire fishing fleet, allowing every family to enjoy enough comfort.
In order to break with tradition, Slane chose a new material – fiberglass – to build this unique yacht. He opened a shipyard in Apex City, North Carolina, and later recruited a young naval architect named Jack Hargrave to help him design the trailblazing yacht. On March 22, 1960, the Hartres Legend was officially unveiled, and Slane named the first search yacht the Knit Wits. With a length of 41 feet, two currents, a 41-foot beam, and two 275-hp Lincoln V-8 engines, the Hartres yacht perfectly exemplifies what it means to be tough.
The appearance of the Knit Wits yacht caused a strong response. Over the next two years, the Hatteras brand made its first public presentation of the first 41-foot fiberglass motor yacht with a double cabin – the forerunner of modern motor yachts. Due to the market's demand for yachts to be more spacious, convenient and comfortable, other yacht styles soon followed.
In 1967, the Hatteras brand added a yacht production facility in the town of New Nepal off the coast of North Carolina. More than 30 years later, all of these production facilities were consolidated into the 95-acre town of New Nepal to continue its legacy.
So far, the Hatteras brand has defined the production standard of a yacht as: it can have extraordinary performance even in the worst of waters. All of our yacht bottoms are made of sturdy fiberglass, which is very sturdy.
