As far as one can remember, Polish shipyards have never appeared among the leaders of the European yachting industry. Since the Middle Ages, the country has often been a battlefield full of flames. Gdansk is located in the north of Poland, at the mouth of the Wisla River, known as Poland's most desirable main route to the sea. The city was also the gateway to the Prussian region and most of the German territory.
Germany and Poland fought many wars over the city. Although the wars left a heavy indelible mark on Gdansk, they also led to a multinational and multicultural co-existence. Germany's strengths in shipbuilding naturally filtered down to Gdansk, where the Sunreef yacht brand, specialising in catamarans, was founded in the early 1990s. Over the past decade, this unfamiliar start-up brand has become a leading force in the world of catamarans.
From its inception, the Polish yacht brand Sunreef has seen high-end and luxury as a market niche, and even its relatively small 60-footers follow an objectified approach. They are well aware that comfort is the decisive advantage of a catamaran and that maximising comfort is the key to market acceptance of a catamaran brand. The brand's ‘mobile villas on the water’ have been extended from 60 to 114 feet in line with the idea of expanding leisure living space on land, and in the first half of 2010, the 34-metre ‘Floating Mansion’, named Che, successfully rewrote the global record for catamarans and sailing dhows. The Sunreef brand specialises in building yachts made of aluminium and modern lightweight composites, including 62 models of sailing yachts using CoreCell foam sandwich construction on hull, deck and flybridge. All structural bulkheads with foam sandwich carbon fibre are reinforced with longitudinal aluminium alloys.
The Polish Sunreef yacht brand is now a world leader in the catamaran segment. Its designs are mainly semi-customised for clients in the 62-80ft range, and fully customised for clients in the 90-200ft range.
